Curtis Powell was a young African-American soldier training at Camp Lejeune in the 51st Composite Defense Battalion when he was tapped to participate in a top secret super soldier experiment. During this time the United States and Nazi Germany were both in a race to create the perfect soldier in an attempt to turn the tide of the war in their respective favors. For the most part the US used african american volunteers to run their tests on and Curtis Powell was one of many to be involved in them. Many different cocktails and serums were developed using a variety of animal genes combined with steroids. Eventually the use of steroids was discontinued as once the body metabolized them the enhanced effects would disappear. Eventually they began to experiment using advanced versions of viruses to exact biochemical and genetic changes in the body and one such treatment was created using equid and human genes. As a result Curtis Powell was transformed into a fast moving super soldier. The project was codenamed BLAQUE for undisclosed reasons and Curtis was codenamed the Blaque Stallion (due to his superhuman speed) and operated as a covert operative moving back and forth between spies in Nazi Germany and all over Europe informing them and receiving information from them.
After the war ended Curtis Powell was rewarded with the Medal of Honor for service during the war and was allowed to return to civilian life in North River City, VA with one condition: that he be ready if he was ever needed again. Curtis Powell decided to use his downtime and powers to become a superhero but unfortunately even though African-Americans had fought valiantly during the war, racism was still prevalent. Curtis was reminded of this a few days after he had arrived in North River. Walking down the street he noticed a woman being attacked by a thug in an alley. Curtis not wanting to reveal his identity grabbed some stockings from a nearby shop and pulled them over his head. He then sped to the woman in trouble, dispatched the armed thug and tied him up. Curtis helped the woman to her feet and while she was initially thankful when she saw his black skin she screamed bloody murder and demanded that he unhand her. She then shouted for the police and Curtis made himself scarce. Curtis had wanted to help people but he couldn't very well do this while the people he was trying to help were scared and hated him. So Curtis took his love of westerns and combined that with his army uniform to create a costume for when he was fighting crime. A costume that covered his entire body as not to let on to anyone that he was black.
His top speed was about the speed of sound so his costume held up pretty well except in skirmishes with villains like Der Panzer. He operated like this for nearly 10 years independently (every once in a while being called on by the government to do a covert mission for them) until 1959 when he revealed to the public that he was indeed a black man. While some took umbrage at the fact that he was black, a lot of people still saluted him. And while some blacks didn't like the fact that he hid his identity as a black for so long, others admired his courage to help those who hated and feared him. Blaque Stallion worked with many a hero including the American Patriot before he retired and disappeared in the early '70s.
During his career Curtis married a woman named Beatrice and let her in on his secret. After Curtis retired from active duty as a hero they had two children named Marcus and Jacquelyn who are aware of their father's exploits but by and large possess no superhuman abilities as far as anyone knows. However they both inherited his strong sense of justice and right and wrong so Marcus is District Attorney in North River and Jackie is a police woman on the North River City Police Force.
The BLAQUE treatments have appeared to retard his aging keeping him quite young looking (around 50) while he is actually about 80. However his wife Beatrice died a few years ago of old age. Every once in a while he comes out of retirement to do a case with the current Blaque Stallion, Devon Johnson and his mentor Ron Jackson (the second Blaque Stallion).
Metahuman Powers: Through a treatment known as BLAQUE, Curtis developed the ability to move, think and react at speeds in excess of the speed of sound. His body has adapted to the rigors of running at great speeds including developing a super-humanly efficient cardiovascular and respiratory system. He also possesses enhanced strength, stamina, agility, and reflexes as a result of his speed. While not as fast as Ron and Devon he more than makes up for his decreased speed with skill.
Other Special Skills & Abilities: Lightning quick mind makes him a brilliant strategist and tactician. Also has covert operative training with the government.
Special Limitations: Although his age is retarded and he looks to be younger than he is, his endurance isn't quite the same as it used to be. Speedsters generally lack any real vertical movement or long range weapons and are at a disadvantage when facing off against fliers. Objects on the ground such as caltrops, spikes, quick sand, etc can also impede their maneuverability. The Stallions rely on speed, and avoiding attacks rather than plowing through them with invulnerability and super strength so if they get hit it is usually hard. However, their heightened reflexes allows them to roll with and limit the damage of the blows they manage to get hit with.
Notable Equipment: The suit for the most part was nothing special initially, but as a gift to Curtis, Ron made him a replica of his costume utilizing the same materials incorporated in Ron Jackson's High Velocity Super Suit.
